Google Pixel Watch 4: Key upgrades, release date and prices

Google's 2025 flagship smartwatch is on the way

Being a technology buff, there's nothing quite like looking forward to the next major release from our beloved brands. And in the realm of wearables, my own eyes are set on Google. The Pixel Watch range, although still quite new, has already been making waves, and I, along with most of you, am looking forward to the Google Pixel Watch 4. 

Official information is thin on the ground (all right, nonexistent right now!), but that doesn't prevent an enthusiast from fantasizing and wondering what Google might and ought to bring. So, get a coffee, and let's take a look at my own wishlist and expectations for the Pixel Watch 4, from major upgrades to that all-critical release date and price.

The Evolution So Far: A Brief Look Back

Let's take a fleeting glance over our shoulder at where we've reached before we bound off into the future. The first Pixel Watch was a stunning, if slightly battery-starved, coming-out party for Google's take on Wear OS. It had potential, combining Fitbit health tracking natively and sporting that unmistakable Google design language. 

The Pixel Watch 2 improved upon this, adding much-needed battery life improvements, a new cEDA sensor for measuring stress, and the upgraded Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 chip, which made the performance noticeably faster. These incremental changes are important, and they pave the way for what I hope will be an even bigger step with the Pixel Watch 4.

My Fantasy Upgrades to the Pixel Watch 4: More Than Incremental

Here's where the anticipation really starts! I don't want incremental tweaks; I want the Pixel Watch 4 to really break the mold of what a Wear OS smartwatch can do.

1. A Design Evolution: Bezel-Less Beauty (and Size Options!)

Let's begin with aesthetics. The domed, round face of the Pixel Watch is iconic, but that bezel, though charming, does seem a tad old-fashioned in an edge-to-edge world. My top design wish for the Pixel Watch 4 is a dramatically smaller or even bezel-less screen. Think about the screen real estate! This would not only be very sleek looking but also more immersive when interacting with it.

In addition, Google, do listen to me: additional size choices! The existing one-size-fits-all doesn't suit all. A smaller model for those with slimmer wrists and possibly a larger, thicker model for those who like a larger watch face would be revolutionary. That would make it so much more appealing.

2. Battery Life: The Holy Grail of Smartwatches

Alright, this isn't a desire; it's a flat-out requirement. While the Pixel Watch 2 was bettered, we're still dealing with around 24 hours with AOD off. For the Pixel Watch 4, I'd like to see multi-day battery life (a minimum of 2-3 days with AOD enabled). This means a more power-efficient processor – maybe a next-generation Snapdragon Wear, or even Google-specific custom Tensor chip, designed just for wearables.

Imagine leaving your charger behind for a weekend outing without stress. That's the dream! This would actually make the Pixel Watch a smooth addition to your life, rather than a daily ritual of charging.

3. Performance & Internal Power: A True Pixel Experience

The Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 was a decent step, but I'd like a bigger leap in the Pixel Watch 4. I'd love to see either:

A next-generation Snapdragon Wear chip: Even more power-efficient and powerful, providing silky-smooth animations and fast app launch.

A Tensor chip for wearables: My own fantasy. If Google were to get the smarts and power efficiency of its Tensor chip on the watch, we would see amazing on-device AI for health monitoring, quicker Google Assistant response times, and even more advanced machine learning on your wrist. This would be a uniquely cohesive and integrated Google ecosystem experience.

Additional RAM and storage would also be appreciated for future-proofing and more seamless multitasking.

4. Enhanced Health & Fitness Tracking: 

More than the Basics

. Fitbit integration is great, but the Pixel Watch 4 can do even better.

Non-invasive Blood Glucose Monitoring: This is the moonshot, but if any company could crack it, it's Google. Imagine a future where your watch could provide insights into your blood sugar without needles. This would be a revolutionary feature for millions.

. Enhanced Sleep Tracking with More Detail: 

While current tracking is good, deeper insights into sleep stages, restorative sleep, and personalized recommendations would be incredible.

Body Temperature Monitoring: Handy for sickness detection, and even fertility monitoring.

More Accurate GPS: For runners and cyclists, precise GPS location is absolutely important for maintaining accurate pace and distance tracking.

. Recovery Measurements:

Not just activity, data on how well your body is recovering from exercise would be incredibly useful.

5. Smart Features & Quality of Life Features

. Satellite Connectivity (Limited): 

Not full calls, but satellite-based emergency SOS would be a lifesaver in remote locations, similar to the iPhone's use of it.

. Faster, More Reliable Haptics: 

A more accurate and more powerful haptic engine would make interactions and notifications that much more gratifying.

. Better Water Resistance: 

5ATM is great, but working towards 10ATM for more durable swimming and water sports would be a bonus.

Improved Microphone & Speaker: For more understandable calls and improved Google Assistant conversations.

The Big Questions: Price and Release Date

Guessing release dates and prices is always a guessing game, but given Google's track record, we can take some informed shots in the dark.

Release Date:

Google has always introduced its Pixel Watches along with its main Pixel phones in October. I don't think there is any reason why this should be different for the Pixel Watch 4.

 Therefore, pencil it in: October 2024 is the most likely window for the official announcement and subsequent availability. We may see some teasers or leaks beforehand in the preceding months, but the major announcement typically comes at the Made by Google event.

Price:

The Pixel Watch has had a steady pricing pattern. The first one began at $349 for Wi-Fi and $399 for LTE. The Pixel Watch 2 did the same.

With the possibility of major updates, particularly if we get a custom Tensor chip or game-changing health sensors, I expect a bit of a price hike for the Pixel Watch 4. My guess:

. Google Pixel Watch 4 (Wi-Fi): Starting at about $379 - $399

. Google Pixel Watch 4 (LTE): Priced at around $429 - $449

Naturally, these are all just my educated hunches. Google may surprise us, either by maintaining the price point or by introducing a high-end 'Pro' variant for an even greater price, for genuinely bleeding-edge features.

My Personal Takeaway: Why I'm So Invested

To me, the Pixel Watch is not another device; it is Google's canvas for the future of ambient computing. I adore the tidy integration in the Google ecosystem, the smooth Fitbit health monitoring, and the unique design. But there is always something to improve, and with the Pixel Watch 4, I really think Google can make a huge statement in the space of smartwatches.

I'm waiting eagerly for a watch that not only monitors my steps and provides me with notifications but actually gets woven into the fabric of my daily routine with record-breaking battery life, blazing performance, and actually useful, if not even revolutionary, health information. If Google delivers on even a fraction of my wish list, the Pixel Watch 4 won't be an improvement; it'll be a game-changer. Let's hope my fantasies come true!
